First Off, How Does YouTube Count Views?

Well, it's complicated, but possibly the best way the counter could work. As soon as you upload your video, you will see your views building up quickly. But then you notice that it freezes at 200-320 mark. Your counter will now update every 8-12 hours and sometimes even longer (rarely, should not last longer than 48 hours if you're getting actual views). You may even freeze for a week or a month (our customers DO NOT FREEZE). The reason why your counter freezes is because YouTube thinks that your real views do not match the views on the counter so it "waits" until your real views reach the amount listed on the counter. The fact is double views, proxy views, bot views all "work" until you get frozen in 300-350 range. If you want to know how many "Real Views" you have, just check the "Statistics & Data" and look at the graph. Or look at your "YouTube Insight."

Before Uploading - File Names Matter

Do not upload your video if the file name is titled like video192.mpg or finalversion923.mpg and so on. Put the artist name and the title of the of the song in the actual file name. It should look like Gina Tesler - Morning Sunshine.mpg or Gina_Tesler_-_Morning_Sunshine.mpg. This will help you rank higher in YouTube search and it will get picked up by Google as well.

Title Your Video

We see lot's of people just placing a one word video title. Why? Put the artist name and the song name in the actual title.

Video Description

Another common sense tip. Describe the video to the fullest. Don't leave it blank. Place your myspace or website links there. Just place it with "http://" and YouTube will automatically convert it to a link. NOTE: The more specific you are in description, the more targeted hits will be.

First 48 Hours Are Crucial

As soon as you upload the video, you have less than 48 hours to make a significant impact. You'd want to bang out as much visitors as possible because it will place your video in the "Today's Honors." Basic honors are "#XX Most Viewed Today - [Category] - [Country]" (Where #XX refers to a number on the chart.) You can easily rack up around 10 different honors with just 5,000 hits within 24 hours (Depends on your video category). The more hits you get, the more honors will be awarded.


Use the honors to promote yourself further. The video will keep on getting hits on its own.

Life After 48 Hours

After 48 hours your honors will disappear because your video is too old by now to be considered in "Today's" category. The video will now be included in the "This Week" Category instead. Usually if you have at least 10,000 views by this time, then you should be on the "This Week" honors category. After the week is over, it goes to "This Month" category. The next step is "All Time" honors, which is almost impossible. "All Time" means that your video is in TOP 100 most viewed videos on YouTube...ever (all time). To be included in "All Time", you'd probably need around 28,000,000 views.
