Sooner or later a rapper like Asher Roth was eventually going to hit the hip-hop scene. Like so many of the consumers of the rap genre, Roth is a suburban white kid who went to a private college, wears khaki’s and likes to party. He acknowledges that he has lived a privileged life with a Yoga-instructor mother and a design firm executive director father. Compared to Eminem, the only thing Roth has in common is that he is white.
Marshall Mathers grew up in a poor urban environment and lived with his drug-addicted mother and his songs reflect this lifestyle. Roth raps about college life and eating while stoned.
Although seen as somewhat of a joke, Roth does in fact have some nice flowing lyrics. He has to. A white rapper cannot make it in the rap game without writing great lyrics and combining them with tight beats.
“Hot Wangs,” produced by will.i.am and using a sample from Talib Kweli’s “Hot Thing,” follows this theme. The leak is pretty good and will sure keep college kids anticipating his March 23 Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry album release. No matter if the tracks makes too much of a dent on hip-hop radio stations playlists, it certainly will be played a lot at the Frat House.
