Avril Lavigne has a new video out. “Alice” the new single appearing on the soundtrack of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” was a song written to be the theme for the movie. The video which features Avril in the world of wonderland doesn’t quite hit the mark though.
It’s a serious departure from the image Avril represented when she burst onto the music scene in 2002. Its not really a bad song and its not a bad video but neither aspect seems to really seem to work well together. The video is high concept and the song is just average and they don‘t mesh.
The main problem though, probably is that the song and video are confused. What is the song really about? It seems like it could be about dealing with death, but also like its supposed to be about “Alice in Wonderland.” Neither of those really work. Only a few lines seem to apply.
In some ways, it feels more like Taylor Swift should have performed it than Avril Lavigne. It’s not fun or moving in any way and those are characteristics that always applied to Avril’s music. Think about “Complicated,” “Skater Boi” and “Girlfriend” those were all fun songs. With a concept that should have been somewhat whimsical the video and song should have been fun. Instead it was dark and attempting to be philosophical..I think. (No offense Taylor, you just have similar voice and better image for the song.)
And while some may say that Avril has sold out with songs like “Girlfriend” that catered to pop audiences, “Alice” seems to be the true mark of a sell-out. It’s a song that doesn’t really fit with what she has done in the past and it was done specifically for the movie for undoubtedly a high price. Good for her I guess, but I liked the rebel better.

March 6th, 2010Watching these generic images in 3-D – a disingenuous war against piracy that has been disguised as “immersive” and “revolutionary: – doesn’t help. What exactly is so immersive about tea cups almost hitting you in the face? At least James Cameron tried experimenting with 3-D’s depth-of-field when he made FernGully in Space. Here, the effect is so cheap and gimmicky that I kept wishing the Red Queen would cry “off with his head” and let the 3-D axe end my suffering once and for all.
