Biggest Recording Contract In Music History

The King of Pop may have been dead for almost a year now, but Michael Jackson still remains more famous than everyone else. Recently, the public became aware that the Jackson estate had signed a 7 year, over $200 million deal with Sony Music Entertainment, which is said to be the biggest recording contract in music history.

The record deal could possibly last for up to 10 new projects involving the late pop star, including unreleased recordings, DVDs and even video games. John Branca, a special administrator for the Jackson estate, stated “We and Sony feel that the future for Michael Jackson is unlimited.”, which is an obvious statement since the talented artist’s albums have sold over 31 million copies since his death. This new record deal, along with the number of albums sold, has reportedly brought in almost $250 million to the estate, which helped pay back some of the estimated $500 million in debt Jackson owed when he died.

The branch of Sony that will most likely handle all these productions is Columbia Epic Records. Chairman of Columbia Epic Records, Rob Stringer, has said the recordings will “span across different projects. There may be theater. There may be films and movies. There maybe computer games — or multimedia platforms that I don’t know about today that will happen in 2015.”

Some new material that has already been confirmed is a reissue of Jackson’s 1979 solo debut hit album, Off the Wall, which will feature new material, and is due out next year. According to people that were close to the artist, there are supposedly over 100 unreleased songs that can be used for new projects over a span of many, many years. As most performers get more publicity after their deaths, it is no surprise that the King of Pop has gotten bigger than he already was, which was a hard feat in all itself. And just like other icons that have passed on, many people in the future will undoubtedly continue to enjoy the music and life of the star. Legends never die, and Michael Jackson was indeed a living legend.
