If you can get beyond the imma be mantra throughout the song and realising it is a perversion of “I’m going to be” that sounds like a white suburban kid trying to sound all hood, you still can’t help but think that it begins to sound like “I’m a bee.”
“Imma Be”, was the first promo single that was released for download on iTunes on May 19, 2009. It was later released at the fourth full length single. It was the third single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song is currently number one on the charts at iTunes. And even after this amount of time, it is no surprise really. Who doesn’t want this song for their iPod’s party playlist.
The track is off of the Black Eyed Peas fifth studio album titled The E.N.D. or “The Energy Never Dies.” And in fact this holds true for the Black Eyed Peas in this song. In actuality, the energy actually picks up momentum part of the way through the song when the tempo shifts and really gets the party started.
Apparently The E.N.D. actually is referring to concern over the decline of the consumption of the album as an entire piece of art. However, this is an odd concern for a group that has achieved great success from the exposure of their singles over at iTunes.
Still, it has given the band pause as to how they will proceed with their future albums. In an interview with Billboard.com, will.i.am said “The E.N.D.” stands for the “The Energy Never Dies.” “It’s a diary…of music that at any given time, depending on the inspiration, you can add to it,” he said. “I’m trying to break away from the concept of an album. What is an album when you put 12 songs on iTunes and people can pick at it like scabs? That’s not an album. There is no album anymore.”
So whatever The E.N.D. result will be for future Black Eyed Peas albums or releases of singles, you most likely can expect more of the same; uninspired lyrics that equal the intellectual level of Lil’ Wayne and some really innovated beats and production techniques.
Part of what used to make the Black Eyed Peas interesting was that they did have an intellectual element to their songwriting infused with the innovative freshness of hip-hop.
After “My Humps” hit the air, it seems that lyrically, the Black Eyed Peas have spiraled downwards.
Will I have “Imma Be” on my party playlist? Of course imma be pumping this jam on any given weekend night. But come Monday morning, imma be hung over and not in any mood for Fergie and her shaking hips.
