On the heels of B.o.B.’s blistering hit, “Nothin’ on You,” the newest leak off of his upcoming album The Adventures of Bobby Ray “The Kids” is a slowly paced, methodical social commentary backed by the music of one of the more popular indie rock bands today.
Many times a hip-hop artist will “sample” music from a popular rock band. B.o.B. did a little more than sample Vampire Weekend’s track “The Kids Don’t Stand a Chance.” The backing track for 100-percent of “The Kids” is from the Vampire Weekend release — no extra beats or instruments were added.
Many times using another band’s music would be a mark against an artist. For B.o.B.’s version of “The Kids,” the Vampire Weekend song is a perfect combination to the reggae-influenced singing and slow rapping.
The two songs match each other in social commentary, but B.o.B.’s version is a little more straight to the point.
Vampire Weekend’s chorus: “The pinstriped men of morning / Are coming for to dance / With pure Egyptian cotton / The kids don’t stand a chance.”
B.o.B.’s chorus: “The streets don’t give a damn / They’re filled with such pollution / The kids don’t stand a chance / We’re trapped inside the Matrix / Forced to play our hand / We’re filled with so much hatred / The kids don’t stand a chance.”
Singer Janelle Monae is featured on the track belting, “A child can barely sleep at night / Too worried about tomorrow / And what it beholds, he drowns / Deep down in sorrow.”
For now, B.o.B. does not need to worry too much about what tomorrow will bring. His album drops on April 27th and he should sleep easy knowing that it will soon become a hit.
