Jon Connor – Cleaning Out My Closet
So the story behind this guy is INSANE. I guess he is supposed to save the world from an eventual robot invasion, but some crazy company from the future keeps sending these robotic “terminators” to come and kill him, and every time, he just BARELY manages to escape. The thing is, the last one they sent to kill him actually befriended him, and informed him of his purpose here. He told Jon Connor it was his MISSION to reuse some old Eminem beats and spit a mixtape of his own. He said that very mixtape would end up SAVING THE WORLD…

Game – Skate On (Feat. Lupe Fiasco)
The new Game Mixtape, California Republic, seems to have people really divided. While some are saying it is The Game’s strongest entry yet, some claim that the only reason the tape is so hot is because he has a guest rapper on pretty much EVERY track. Now we understand, that is a far more common move on a mix tape than it is a regular tape, but still, having a cat like Lupe on a track can make ANYONE sounds good. It is like that idea of that Jon Connor mixtape that dropped recently using all Eminem beats. Anyone can sound good with the right backing, whether it is an established beat or an amazing MC helping you along. Our opinion is not so cut and dry, though. We fall somewhere in between. While we do like what we have heard so far, we do believe that falling back on other MC’s for a whole album tends to take some of the spot light off of him, which is a counter productive business move, but honestly, we dig the track.

Chris Brown – Sweet Love
Chris Brown could, literally, record the greatest song known to mankind, and, in the words of his ex, we have no f*cks left to give. We just CANNOT get behind a guy who feels compelled to beat a woman relentlessly. Now we know people will jump on this thread and comment about how we suck and his personal life has no bearings on the music he makes, but those people are fools. That is like buying the record of a guy you KNOW has raped someone, and being like: It doesn’t matter that he raped someone, this is my JAM!!! But guess what? It matters to us. Perhaps if he showed some modicum of regret of class in the wake of the PR disaster we would have a little more respect for him, but from trashing his dressing room at Good Morning America to his basically posting photos of his johnson in Twitter, we just do not like this guy, and honestly, we want nothing to do with encouraging him as an artist. But hey, they scream, DMX threw D Barnes down a set of stairs in a nightclub and you don’t hate him? Yeah, well, Dre payed his dues. And Dre made the chronic, which is one of the greatest hip hop records ever made. If Chris breezy drops a record on par with that, MAYBE, just maybe, we will begin to forgive him (we are shallow music snobs like that) but for now, we honestly just think him a punk ass with a bad attitude, and he has done nothing to change that opinion, musically or personally.

Neon Trees – Everybody Talks (Music Video Review)
Funny story, pull up a chair. So sometimes as a result of working for a music blog, we get to do cool “music” stuff, and last year, we were at a Neon Trees and Ra Ra Riot show in Providence. We were backstage, when we noticed how similar one of our writers looked to the lead singer of the band. They both had (sort of) mohawks and dark hair and they both had these weird, red leather jackets on. Anyway, it is an hour or so later, and we are all leaving backstage, and our boy, who we will call Remy, gets rushed by people who seem to mistake him for the lead singer. This continues all the way to the train, where he decides to just play it up a little and let people think he is famous. For a brief moment in time, one of us knew what it felt like to be one of these guys, and honestly, we can say, it is pretty awesome. Woman approach you with abandon, men nod and stare quietly. Whoever says being famous sucks, lies. They lie through their lying teeth.

Cassie feat. Kanye West – King of Hearts (Remix) Mp3 Leak
Sometimes, when a song comes out, and you are not a big fan of it, you just kind of forget the song exists and then you go back to living your life. But sometimes, a very rare occasions, someone you greatly admire musically will get their hands on that track and they will inject some much needed life into it, be it through some sick production work or by adding a verse or making the beat a little more accessible. BUT, sometimes, when that happens, as a music fan, you feel like a sellout. Suddenly you like something that you didn’t like before, just because somebody you appreciate put their stamp on it. Well, that is the case here, but we have no qualms about it. We are real. Kanye West is the man, and in typical Kanye fashion, he made the song better, simply by adding his (well deserved) ego to it.

M.iam.i & Flo Rida – (Avalanche) Rescue Me From The Dancefloor (Music Video Review)
And now you are trying to convince us there is also a singing group named M.Iam.I? Someone needs to stop right now. We are not in the mood for these levels of glaring stupidity. How about a fat rapper named Boss.Ton? Or a new school rapper named New.York? Cats like Ghostface Killer and Mos Def must be rolling their eyes at you guys. And it would be OK if the song or video that went along with names that stupid were actually good, but that is NOT the case. You have seen the video a billion times before and you have heard the song TWO million times before. And on top of it, you have TWO of the stupidest names EVER. No, honestly, that is how we feel. If celebs were famous based solely on their names, these two would be working at BK together, flipping dope whoppers instead dropping whack tracks.

Bon Iver – Towers (Music Video Review)
This video honestly could not have come at a better time. Some weeks are REALLY strong for music videos, and in the last few weeks we had new stellar vids from Of Monsters and Men, Gorillaz, Fifty Cent, and a slew of other artists, and frankly, it spoiled us. Now, in this last week, we have hit some new lows. The Avril Lavigne video is just one example. We have been beaten down with boring videos and subpar songs and honestly, we were staring to burn out a little. Bad videos will do that to you when your job is to review them. Then we saw that Bon Iver has released a new single and video, and honestly, that gave us the little kick in the butt we needed. Good music can do THAT to you.

Travis Porter – Ayy Ladies ft. Tyga (Music Video Review)
Um, we don’t really know what to say. We do not get offended, and we love sexy rap video women as much as the next guy (read our Rick Ross video review if you do not believe us) but there is just something so unsettlingly disrespectful to women in all of this that we just cannot get behind it. And yeah, that wasn’t a pun, this video is just wrong on so many levels.

Of Monsters and Men – Slow and Steady (MP3 Leak)
There is not enough good, new music left in the world. It seems like everything we get sounds like something that came before it. It always feels watered down and trampled over. Well, not ALL of it. For example, of Monsters and Men do not fall into that trap. They have a sound that is all their own, with folk rock leanings and lovely, uplifting melodies. True musicians in a sea of karaoke wannabes. And for that reason, their last album rose above the ranks of most of the other albums that had dropped last year and proved to be one of our favorites. And now they are back, with a new album “ My Head is an Animal”, proving they were not just a fluke and will be sticking around the music scene for a long time.

Usher – Climax (Music Video Review)
You know, we heard the song was called CLIMAX, so in our heads, we immediately imagined this video as being all about sex, filled floor to ceiling with half naked, greased up, beautiful girls. We could not have been farther from the truth, though. This video plays around with the idea of fate. With the concept of being on a timeline, and then making ONE choice that alters everything on that timeline. And the repercussions of that one decision can be and how many people it can affect. Yes, he dances a little. This is USHER, in his contract it says he ALWAYS has to dance, even if it is just a little. But this video shows a darker and more introspective side of the star, who is basically famous for either singing songs about humping or actually humping, so this is a nice departure from the usual Usher. And just so we are all on the same page, the climax he is talking about in this song is NOT the kind woman have during sex, so if you are thinking that, like we were, stop now.

Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe (Music Video Review)
Someone must REALLY like this girl, judging by her numbers, which are pretty staggering. This was one of those “ Wait, who?” moments that happen to us at this site from time to time. Sadly, when someone has 9 MILLION hits on their music video in a few short weeks, we sort of need to do our research and see if the world is either stupid, or we are just missing out on a phenomenon.

Radiohead – Skirting On The Surface (Mp3 Leak)
Radiohead releases a new song from a forthcoming album and all the world stops what they are doing at that moment to listen to it. That is just the kind of respect a band like Radiohead gets. They have been making music since the 90s, and some would say they advance their sound a little further with every album. Honestly, for every person who says that, though, there is an old-school Radiohead fan waiting to tell you the band have steadily declined since their opus album OK COMPUTER. They are a polarizing band in that aspect. But honestly, what would you do in their place? You make albums people deem all but perfect, so how do you top that? Radiohead did not attempt to top that. They simple attempted to change it. And with every album, they have. Whether the album is being driven by a mostly electronic heartbeat, or the album is a high concept piece about cloning the perfect child, Radiohead have maintained the status quo by staying one step ahead of it at all times and basically defining what that term means. Though this song has been in Radioheads playlist now for a few years, it is nice to know it will be getting the album space it deserves, seeing that it is a typically brilliant song from a typically brilliant band.
