Chris Brown’s Dramatic BET Performance

Chris BrownThe music world is abuzz with the gripping Michael Jackson tribute performance on the June 27th BET Awards by convicted felon Chris Brown because the singer cried onstage. Not only did Brown cry, he broke down to the point that he just gave up trying to sing Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” But Internet gossip sites aren’t just talking about the incident, they are enamored with the rumor that Brown concocted the tears in order to grab some sympathy after spending more than a year in hiding after his infamous assault on the face of Rihanna.

The tears started to flow after five minutes of Brown dancing through Jackson’s catalogued hits like “Remember the Time,” “Billie Jean,” and “Smooth Criminal.” Brown does an AMAZING King of Pop impression, dancing perfectly throughout the entire performance. He finally grabs a microphone to try and sing “Man in the Mirror,” but nothing comes out. Brown then spends more than a full minute of excruciating pain trying to sing the words to a shocked crowd.

After the performance, entertainment sites started putting up polls wondering if the tears were real. According to a poll from the LA Times, 34% of respondents thought, “Chris was thinking only of Jackson and was choked up by his death.” Grabbing second place in the poll, with 27% of the votes, was, “Chris was 100% faking a breakdown to get sympathy.” If the question were posed, “Should Chris Brown be forgiven for beating the hell out of Rihanna?” a similar percentage would probably be resulted.

The fact remains that Brown should not be forgiven, or condemned, based on a single performance on the BET Awards — whether he was legitimately crying or not. Let’s not forget that he took the face of Rihanna, an amazingly beautiful and talented singer, and smashed it into a car window. Everyone saw the ghastly photos, and Brown plead guilty to felony assault. This isn’t like Kobe Bryant or Ben Roethlisberger, where one can only speculate about their sexual assault charges. There aren’t photos in those cases and the charges were dropped. Brown admitted to beating Rihanna and everyone saw the proof. He needs a little more than a decent dance performance and some tears before he starts to make amends.

It’s been 17-months people! The Beatles said they were bigger than Jesus in 1966, and received forgiveness from The Vatican this year. They received forgiveness — from an organization that was built on the idea of offering God’s forgiveness — 44-years-later. Should everyone forgive Brown because he cried onstage?

Brown received five years of probation and was ordered to stay at least 50-yards away from Rihanna. He has only spent one year on probation so far, and there has not been any word from Rihanna if she has forgiven him for his assault. There are just a few crimes that the public refuses to give any sympathy for. One of those crimes is beating up a woman. The other is child molestation. It seems fitting that Brown was the one who paid tribute to Jackson — who was accused on more than one occasion of child molestation. The public is more apt to be forgiving if the accused can throw a football, dunk a basketball or do the moonwalk.

Most likely Brown’s tears were in fact real due to the combination of Jackson’s death, Brown’s personal struggles and the surrealistic moment of performing “Man in the Mirror.” And although his tears were probably real, so were Rihanna’s.
