Chris Robinson — the lead singer of the Counting Crowes (or is it the Spin Doctors? Wait, no, it might be the Black Crowes. Yep, the Black Crowes) — told Nylon Guys magazine that he is not a fan of Swift and thinks she’s fake.
“I find it embarrassing that adults are like, ‘Taylor Swift is very talented.’ She’s not. She might be cute, but she’s horrible,” Robinson said — most likely in between bites of pot brownies.
He continued to say, “[Pop stars] have stylists who dress them, they make records with producers who play a chord into the computer and it all comes out the same … When you have computers doing it all for you … there’s no individuality. Singing isn’t always about being on key; it’s about emotionality (sic).”
Nothing is really mentioned about the context of these quotes though. Why does Robinson take a jab at Swift? It’s not as if he has been in the same category as she has in any MTV Music Video Awards or Grammy Awards. She shouldn’t even appear on his radar. Maybe he too is just a big Beyoncé fan.
And he is obviously getting Taylor Swift confused with other talentless females churning out bubblegum pop. No one can deny Swift’s talent.
Swift started playing guitar and writing songs at 11-years-old. She won a national poetry contest in 4th grade. She was hired as a staff songwriter at 14-years-old by Sony/ATV Tree publishing house. She was offered a record contract from RCA Records at 15-years-old, but rejected their offer.
Sure, Swift is beautiful, but this isn’t the reason she has inspired millions of tween girls. She doesn’t use sex to gain publicity. Her lyrics are sweet and innocent. She writes her own music and actually plays guitar.
Robinson hops around on stage for two hours while people wait to hear “Remedy,” a 1992 release that hit #48 on the Billboard Hot 100. Swift had 13 songs from her album Fearless that made the Billboard Hot 100, which is a world record for the number of chart-topping songs from a single album. Yes, more than Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, and the Counting Crowes (oops, Black Crowes).
And not only can Swift sing and play the guitar, but she acts as well. Plenty of musicians have hosted Saturday Night Live, but not many have been funny. Not only was Swift hilarious, but she also wrote her own opening monologue — which hosts do not normally do — and she was only 19-years-old.
No one can deny Swift’s talent and she should not be compared to sex-infused pop stars who use Auto-Tune. You may not like her music Mr. Robinson — or the fact that she has more Grammy’s than you — but Swift is not “horrible” by any means.
