Christina Aguilera – Not Myself Tonight (Music Video Review)

4 StarsChristina Aguilera’s new raunchy video for “Not Myself Tonight” is drawing comparisons to Lady Gaga, Madonna and other female pop stars due to its S&M themed sexuality. Everyone, from YouTube commentators to expert critics, are calling Aguilera a copycat artist due to the similarities of this video and other popular videos from pop divas.

But, is this video a copycat, a parody or an ode to these other artists?

Christina Aguilera - Not Myself Tonight

Christina AguileraDaniel Kreps of Rolling Stone wrote, “Aguilera assumes no less than a dozen different guises, all scantily clad, ranging from carbon copies of Lady Gaga (borrowing heavily from her unique wardrobe), Madonna, Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani, the girls from Robert Palmer’s ‘Simplt Irresistible’ video and Michelle Pfeiffer’s S&M-inspired Catwoman form Batman Returns. Depite the videos attempt to shock, it’s unlikely Aguilera will ever out-Gaga Gaga or out-controversy Madonna … Hopefully next time she steps in front of the lens she’ll be more herself and less like everyone else.”

For someone who is so well versed in his knowledge of past music videos from pop stars, Kreps truly seems to missing the point. Does the fact that Aguilera recreates Madonna’s “Express Yourself” video in her own by wearing a monocle on top of the exact same flight of stairs wearing the same outfit Madonna did tell you that this is the work of a copycat or idolater? It seems that Aguilera is not copying anyone, but instead paying tribute to Madonna’s work.

To say that Aguilera is trying to be like Lady Gaga for wearing revealing and shocking clothing while straddling both guys and girls is to forget that Aguilera already did this in her controversial 2002 video for “Dirrty” when Lady Gaga was only 16-years-old and known as Stefani Germanotta.

This is also to forget that in 2008, Lady Gaga was quoted in OK! Magazine thanking Aguilera for helping with her notoriety after Aguilera was quoted as saying she did not know who Lady Gaga was.

Gaga said, “She’s such a huge star and if anything I should send her flowers, because a lot of people in America didn’t know who I was until that whole thing happened. It really put me on the map in a way.”

Christina Aguilera

For people to say that Aguilera is copying anyone is a ludicrous statement. If anything, Aguilera is parodying all the female popular singers of today, especially since the title of the song is “Not Myself Tonight.”

She sings, “I’m out of character / I’m in rare form / And if you really knew me / You’d know it’s not the norm / Cause I’m going things that I normally don’t do / The old me’s gone I feel brand new / And if you don’t like it f*ck you.”

This video truly represents a “Chicken or the Egg” philosophic question. Who influenced whom? Who copied whom?

No matter what the answer is, the fact that Aguilera has returned to using sexuality in her videos — along with what is critically known as one of the best female singing voices ever — should get her back to musical stardom she once just shared with one or two other divas. Now, the landscape is a little more crowded with Gwen Stefani, Ke$ha, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Rhianna and Lady Gaga.

Note: There are two versions of the video on YouTube, an unedited version and a clean version. Please note that the “clean” version describes the fact that the song’s lyrics have been edited and in no way describes the strong sexual images in the video. Image-wise, the videos are exactly the same with Aguilera wearing next to nothing while grinding on top of rain-soaked shirtless men. Only on the Internet could one fins something described as “Clean,” but would not be allowed on any television channel before 11 pm.
