Christina Aguilera – You Lost Me (Music Video Review)

When Christina Aguilera released her video for “Not Myself Tonight” in May, plenty of critics blasted her as trying copy Lady Gaga. Not us. We instead brought insight into the new diva wars of 2010 by citing Aguilera’s history of using her sexuality to gain some attention for quite some time before Gaga ever hit the music scene (or puberty) — as Aguilera proved with her video for “Dirrty” in 2002.

Aguilera then followed up “Dirrty” — which is still one of the most sexually charged video shoots ever — a few months later with her incredible ballad for “Beautiful.” Aguilera participates in a sweaty choreographed orgy in “Dirrty”, but barely appears in the video for “Beautiful.” The only times she appears is when she is shown belting the lyrics in an empty room while wearing sweat pants as scenes of transvestites, anorexic girls and gay men making out take the center stage. “Dirrty” was all about her ass, whereas the video for “Beautiful” was all about her voice.

Aguilera follows this timeline structure again with the video for “You Lost Me,” an emotional and heartfelt song that shows how multifaceted Aguilera really is — and always has been.

The video and song is all about a cheating man and the ensuing breakup, and is belted out like only Aguilera can do. Plenty of “singers” can strip down to their underwear while dry-humping a group of dancers. Not many can sing like Aguilera, and if they can they usually look like Aretha Franklin and no one wants to see Aretha in her underwear. Chills.

Anthony Medler — who recently shot videos for Jay-Z’s “Young Forever,” Usher’s “OMG,” and Muse’s “Neutron Star Collision” — directs the simple and effective video. Aguilera is the only person in the video — except for a faceless and shirtless man. Aguilera gently sings the opening lyrics while inside a vacated bedroom.

“I am done
Smoking gun
We’ve lost it all
The love is gone
She has won
Now it’s no fun
We’ve lost it all
The love is gone
And we had magic
And this is tragic
You couldn’t keep your hands to yourself.”

Aguilera’s builds and builds until she explodes with a crescendo that could be heard from the highest mountaintops.

“Oh, I feel like our world’s been infected
And somehow you left me neglected
We’ve found our lives been changed
Cause babe, you lost me.”

To call Aguilera a copycat just proves that some music writers are too lazy to do research and/or have absolutely no sense of history when it comes to pop music. Aguilera hasn’t copied anyone. She’s always been multifaceted and multitalented. Sometimes she likes to show some skin. Sometimes she likes to show vocal range. Not many artists have this option. Christina Aguilera does, and she knows when to use each option.
