Daniel Wesley: “Drunk + Stoned” Music Video Review

As millions of college kids start classes, and thousands of weekend parties are planned, a musical switch occurs on the iTunes playlist. The summer hits are no longer cool. Playing “California Gurls” at a kegger is just so July-ish. It doesn’t work for September and for tailgating. Luckily, there is a form of new music out there, which we will dub “Frat Rock” or more aptly titled; “Douche Rock.”

Daniel Wesley’s video release for “Drunk + Stoned” fits this category perfectly. Although the video takes place at a keg party on the beach, the Labor Day video release signals the end of summer and the start of football season — which is filled with face-painted binge drinking.

“Drunk + Stoned,” will be a HUGE hit at college parties this fall. It has to be. It has every piece of the necessary formula for the chill-out portion of a college party — which is either several hours before vomiting, or immediately after vomiting. By no means is “Drunk + Stoned” the next dance hit, but the mellow guitar chords, the sing-along portion of the chorus, and the fact that it is about getting both hammered and high, will surely lead it to being played on repeat at tailgates over and over again.

“I’ll be singing my songs (You know I will) / And you’ll be singing along (Every word) / And we’ll get drunk and stoned (You know we will) / Together all night long!”

The song even has a group of drunk and stoned partiers singing along as well. If there was a recipe for creating a hit college song, Daniel Wesley has found it.

The video itself features Wesley playing guitar on a beach while beautiful people hang out and drink from red Solo cups — the national sign of a PARTY! Football is played on the beach, girls in bikinis do hand-stands, a bartender pretends to be Tom Cruise in Cocktail. This party looks almost perfect. Toward the end, the group even has a campfire with roasted marshmallows! Now it’s perfect.

And as clichéd as this party looks, and as much as Wesley looks like a douchebag — with his hipster soul patch and black fedora — the fact remains that the song is just so damn catchy. You want to hate it because you know so many Frat guys will be whispering the lyrics to it into the ears of passed out Sorostitutes, but you just can’t. It’s the perfect college song, and it comes at a perfect time of the year.

The type of people, who hate college football, keg parties, tailgating, and hot girls, will truly hate this song and video. But, of course, those people will never see this video because they are too busy playing World of Warcraft.
