Eddy Grant, mainly known for his old school hit, Electric Avenue, is scolding the Gorillaz for supposedly ripping off his song ‘Time Warp’ in their recent hit song ‘Stylo’.
Anyone who has heard the two songs by the artists can immediately point out the similarities right away. The question is, though, if the Gorillaz really meant to copy Eddy Grant. Although he hasn’t threatened bringing this to court, Grant has demanded that he get an apology, along with credit for writing the song. In an e-mail widely sent out by Grant, the 80′s artist states his unhappiness with the whole situation, and how he doesn’t understand why the “mutual publisher” of the two bands, EMI, didn’t catch the similarities. He also briefly talked about his disappointment in the “incestuous” ways of the music industry and how it’s merging all labels and publishers into one.
If the Gorillaz did indeed knowledgeably copy the song ‘Time Warp’, then the LEAST they can do is apologize and give the credit to Eddy, mainly since they would only be making themselves look bad. Even if they haven’t realized it at first, they do now. The obvious best thing to do in this situation would be to just apologize, either way, and save everyone their money and time.
