Glee, Fox’s musical TV show is sending its act to the road but this time it doesn’t mean that Fox has cancelled another hit. Instead, Fox is looking to capitalize (I mean that literally) on the show’s success by launching a four city tour with seven shows.
Music from the show, most of it covers, has sold fairly well. With two albums released this past fall, the first in November was titled, Glee: The Music, Volume 1 and the second was released a month later and is originally titled, Glee: The Music, Volume 2. Between the two albums they have sold more than 1 million copies. Volume 1 has sold 730,000 copies while Volume 2 has sold 529,000.
The show has averaged at least 6 million “Gleeks” ( a term for fans of the show-not sure who came up with that one) per episode with the pilot being the biggest draw to date, and making it the best premiere of a scripted show for Fox in three years.
So, they are going to milk this for all its worth. And after placing 25 songs on the Billboard Top 100 within a year and selling more than 1 million downloads it seems like it might be a good idea. Can all that success translate into theater gold? With two shows in New York, two in Chicago and two in Los Angeles, plus the opener in Phoenix I’d say it’s probable. Tickets go on sale March 13.
