Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill (Music Video Review)

The second video that accompanies the Gorillaz’ newest album Plastic Beach uses a mixture of CGI, 3D animation and 2D animation combined with a Hunter S. Thompson-like psychedelic voyage under the ocean.

The video for “On Melancholy Hill” picks up where the “Stylo” video left off — sort of. If you don’t have the time to watch the video, or read our review of it, then at least read this quick summary. The Gorillaz are in some sort of car chase with Bruce Willis, a fat police officer gets swallowed by a gigantic dark figure named “Boogieman,” and the Gorillaz’ car flies off of a cliff and into the ocean. Oh yeah, the car then transforms into a mechanical shark and swims away.

All caught up? Good.

The video for “On Melancholy Hill” begins on a Titanic-like cruise ship with a butler knocking furiously on the door of Noodle because the ship is under attack by World War II-era war planes. Noodle grabs a gigantic gun, heads to the deck and starts shooting the planes down like Cuba Gooding Jr. in Pearl Harbor. Already the Gorillaz have a leg up on that stupid Michael Bay movie by skipping the two-hour-long boring love triangle between Ben Affleck, that British chick and the guy from Black Hawk Down. On a serious note, what the hell ever happened to Josh Hartnett?

Anyway, one of the pilots is able to drop a bomb on the ship, which successfully sinks the whole vessel. Noodle survives and appears on a life raft along with a guitar. The scenes with the characters on top of water are very stylistic, as the viewer cannot truly tell if the water is CGI or simply just animated. The producers and artists do a fabulous job of lighting the sun setting sky.

The viewer is then taken underwater, and we see the mechanical shark driven by Murdoc. The member known as 2D is staring at the Cyborg Noodle — who has a bullet hole in her head. A one-eyed octopus crawls out of Cyborg Noodle’s mouth, which most likely represents how the BP Oil spill — which was caused by a flaw with technology — is destroying the Ocean’s marine life. Please note, that last sentence was a joke. Why does an octopus crawling out of a robot’s mouth have to mean anything? Let’s just accept it for what it is.

The mechanical shark meets up with a bunch of other submarines, driven by collaborating artists like Snoop Dogg and De La Soul. Some very cute jellyfish get caught in an engine, and ink pours out. Huh? Then the submarines emerge on top of the water to witness a dead Manatee being groped by the Boogieman. Cyborg Noodle takes a few gunshots at the Boogieman, until the Boogieman grabs the dead Manatee and falls into the ocean with him.

The fog over the water lifts, and the members of the Gorillaz can now see the “Plastic Beach.”

Now, what the hell does this all mean? It has some obvious references to ocean polluting — which does in fact come at a coincidental time with the oil spill in the gulf. Damon Albarn, the actual producer and musician for the fictional Gorillaz, stated that he got the idea for Plastic Beach after witnessing all the plastic bottles left on the beach front near his home.

It seems that the Gorillaz do in fact have a plan, and a LOST-like endgame, as the animated members of the group have in fact arrived at “Plastic Beach.” After being chased by Bruce Willis and surviving a kamikaze attack, one can only wonder what the next video will bring.
