The best album of 2010, so far goes to the Gorillaz for “Plastic Beach.” It is innovative, fresh, and eclectic. You get a great mix of music all on one album.
The album takes you on a journey through many different moods and settings that you perceive based on the sound and style of the music. On the first listen through I felt as though you could have been in a futuristic movie set, at a runway or artshow opening, at the hottest night club in the city, and even out on the beach with the surf inspired music of “To Binge.”
It has been a few years, actually 5, but who’s counting since the last studio album from English virtual band, Gorillaz and their many co-conspirators in the making of scandalously good music.
Damon Albarn, co-founder of Gorillaz, produced the majority of the album, which can be considered pop for the most part, if you are into categorizing the music you consume, but more specifically has elements of pop, trip hop, electropop, alternative, and hip hop in the mix.

Snoop Dogg, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Kano, Bashy, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, Gruff Rhys, Del La Soul, Little Dragon, Mark E. Smith, Lou Reed, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, sinofonia ViVA, and The Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music all contributed to the album.
In an interview in the Observer in July of 2008, Hewlett said of the project, “look, it’s basically us doing what the f**k we want without worrying about whether it’s for a record company or a film company or whatever. So I’m not sure how it’ll pan out, or even if it will happen. But Damen’s written around 70 songs for it, and I’ve got great plans for the visuals, but right now, at this moment, it’s still just a really good idea.”

So creativity clearly is at born out of lack of constraints be it from the music industry or the film industry and just not giving a f**k. Yes, that is how to produce an album that defies being put in a box.
Singles off of the album include “Stylo,” with was the first single that was released digitally on January 26. Two other singles include “Superfast Jellyfish” and “On Melancholy Hill” which are planned for release later in 2010.
Tracks on the album include: “Orchestral Intro,” “Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach,” “White Flag,” “Rhinestone Eyes,” “Stylo,” “Superfast Jellyfish,” “Empire Ants,” “Glitter Freeze,” “Some Kind of Nature,” “On Melancholy Hill,” “Broken,” “Sweepstakes,” “Plastic Beach,” “To Binge,” “Cloud of Unknowing,” and “Pirate Jet.”
