Along with his "Tweeted" apology, John Mayer publicly admitted to his fans at a sold-out Madison Square Garden show that his use of the “N-word” made him come off as an “asshole,” according to an MTV News report.
“I hate to come off like an asshole ever, and thank you guys for believing I am not an asshole,” Mayer told the audience.
The singer-songwriter felt the need to issue the public apology after using the offensive term during an interview for Playboy Magazine. According to the article published in the magazine and online, Mayer said, “Someone asked me the other day, ‘What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?’ And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n***** pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass?”
Mayer also claimed that he has never dated a black woman before because his “dick” does not let him. He says that he loves African-American women, but his genitalia has a mind of its own, and this mind is a racist one.
Mayer was lambasted because white people can never use the “N-word.” Period.
Mayer eventually explained that he was trying to prove that he could not use the word, and in doing this he proved his point by using it.
He apparently never watched Chris Rock’s HBO special explaining that the only time a white person could use the word is if it is 3 a.m. on Christmas morning, you were just robbed of all your presents and beaten by a black man on your way home to your family. Rock then explained that even then it’s not really O.K.
And although Mayer said the word, and MTV News reported that people were outraged, there did not seem to be even one article online that cited an African-American being offended. No remarks from the NAACP. No urge from Al Sharpton to burn his albums. No picketing his concert from the 2007 Rutger’s Womens’ Basketball team — the victims of the Don Imus “nappy-headed hoes” description. When it all comes down to it, no one seemed very outraged about the remark. It's either that no one really cares about John Mayer or no one ever reads Playboys.
