In the wake of the drug overdose death of Corey Haim and the suicide of Andrew “Boner” Koenig one can only wonder what kind of damage celebrity stardom takes on people who first hit it big as pre-pubescent teenagers.
Will we be reading a similar story in 15-years about Justin Bieber? The overnight sensation already causes mass hysteria wherever he goes, and he is standing in the same spotlight so many others have. The difference is that only a handful of child stars grow up to be a well-adjusted adults, and the others become drug addicts who land in guest spots on Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab.
No matter the outcome of Bieber, the teen shows no signs of slowing down. His new release “Overboard,” featuring Jessica Jarrell, is a clichéd ballad filled with romantic sentiments that middle-school girls love, and music industry executives salivate over.
At this point in his stardom, it doesn’t matter what he sings; Bieber could fart into a microphone and the “release” would go gold. And these are the types of songs that music producers swarm to. They themselves can’t hear how bad a song is because they’re too busy hearing cash registers ring in their ears. The producers behind Bieber, one of them being Usher, exemplify the industry part of “music industry.”
Beiber sings about love in this new track, but no 16-year-old has any idea what love is. Yes, Bieber is shockingly 16-years-old, even though he looks like he is 12-year-old boy, and sings like a 9-year-old girl. In “Overboard,” listeners will not be able to tell what part he sings and what is sung by Jessica Jarrell.
The message he gives in the song mimics the idea of love that Hollywood crams down the throat of heartbroken teenagers’ around the country.
“I’m overboard and I need your love / Pull me up / I can’t swim on my own / It’s too much / Feels like I’m drowning without your love / So throw yourself out to me / My Lifesaver / Oh Lifesaver.”
Those are some dangerous messages being thrown out there to teens of the world; teens who are now more depressed than ever with the state of the world. Bieber, or more likely an anonymous songwriter, basically does the legwork creating a templated suicide note with “Overboard.”
“It’s supposed to be some give and take I know / You’re only taking and not giving anymore / So what will I do (So what will I do) / Cause I still love you / You’re the only one who can save me.”
Only time will tell of Bieber’s fate and whether or not he will continue to have success or be tossed aside as so many others have before. Either way, his note has already been written.
