Ke$ha – Your Love Is My Drug (Music Video Review)

3 and a halfKe$ha has been receiving a lot of criticism lately: for her live performances on national television, for her Twitter battle with Justin Bieber, for her hypocritical diss of autotune (Thanks partly to us hehe) and for plenty of other reasons. Some may think that a star that shot up so quickly will also fall very quickly as well.

So, would her follow-up video to “Tik Tok” and “Blah Blah Blah” be a huge hit like the others, or a big miss that will send her back down to the minors?

The video for “Your Love is My Drug” is actually a fun romp through the desert with Ke$ha, a bearded Jesus-looking male and some cartoons influenced by the Beatles “Yellow Submarine” days. It helps that the song is ridiculously catchy, especially the chorus.

Kesha - Your Love is My Drug

Although the lyrics are similar to poetry written by a heartsick teenager girl pining for the star quarterback, Ke$ha keeps it simple and sweet. No mention of brushing teeth with Jack Daniels or telling a guy to “turn around boy and let me hit that, don’t be a little bitch with your chit chat.” Whereas her first two singles were all about partying like a drunk stripper/whore, “Your Love is Like a Drug” is an ode to the one thing that can make anyone feel light-headed — love.

It is rumored that Ke$ha wrote the song in 10 minutes on an airplane with the help of her mom, and this could very much be true, but it really doesn’t matter. The lyrics work and will not leave your head.

Kesha Bearded Man

The video features Ke$ha waking up in the desert with a bearded guy resembling Christ. One may think that Ke$ha was “saved” and that Jesus’ love is the drug that she is talking about. It’s probably not. She probably is just into skinny guys with beards, and even is quoted as saying, “I like your beard” at the end of the video.

The entire video takes place in the desert with Ke$ha dressed in Native American attire. The video is most likely representative of a peyote-infused “Spirit Journey,” as Ke$ha combines dancing in a Tiger head with Beatles and Salvador Dali-inspired cartoons of naked mermaids (with her signature eye paint) and an elephant spouting pink hearts out of his trunk. The video ends with Ke$ha covered in black-light paint dancing in the dark with a giant snake.

There will always be a thousand things to criticize Ke$ha about, but this song and video accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. It’s a fun video for a song that is very catchy. If Ke$ha continues to pump out more simple pop music with fun videos, she may be around awhile. If she continues to follow them with poorly worded statements about other artists and terrible live performances, she will not.
