Mann ft. Jason Derulo – Text (Music Video Review)

2 StarsSome videos will become popular for ironic reasons. People will watch them because they are ridiculous; the special effects, the acting, the lyrics, the song itself. Rarely does an artist plan to make a crappy video in order for it to become viral, and this is probably not the case when it comes to Mann’s video “Text,” featuring Jason Derulo, but he does succeed in creating an enjoyable video for all the wrong reasons.

It’s not the worst video in the world, but it has a huge “cheese” factor. Whether it’s the opening scene of the duo dancing inside of the Star Wars “Lightspeed” effect, or Mann rapping while eating cereal (what?), the whole video just seems thrown together by someone with a new video camera and an iMac. Mann, who claims that he received the nickname as a child because he was so mature and acted like an adult, raps and dances alongside Derulo — who towers over the very short Mann. One must wonder if the nickname was not given to him because of his maturity, but because he looks like a kid. It’s probably ironic, like calling a fat guy “Slim.”

The song deals with texting girls rather than calling them. It’s somewhat apparent that Mann actually thinks this concept is groundbreaking, and thus will become a “smash” hit, according to his Web site.

Mann - Text ft. Jason Derulo

The description of the song on the site states, “On lead single ‘Text’ featuring Jason Derulo, Mann delivers a future smash that encourages his lady to shoot him a private message. The song has a special significance for Mann, who is sure that listeners will gravitate toward the cut. ‘Nobody really talks on the phone anymore, or they despise talking on the phone,’ he says. “A lot of people I know don’t even have the phone feature on their phone anymore. They just text. It’s so much easier, so everybody’s going to feel the song.”

What is funny about this passage on his Web site — which is also the same word-for-word passage on his Wikipedia page — is that it is written as if an article with this interview appeared in a magazine or on a music Web site. It does not. It was created specifically for his own Web site, and does not attribute the article to any outside source. Someone in Mann’s camp wrote this article “reviewing” his music and stating that “Text” will be a smash hit. It will not.

Social media and texting seem to be Mann’s one strong suit though, as he has his phone number plastered all over his Web site. If you take the risk of actually taking advice from Mann by “hitting him with a text,” you will receive one back that states, “West Up, I promise to hit you back, make sure you reply Y so I can get the message — Mann. To join my mob, reply Y (Msg&data rate may apply).”

Without hitting him back with a “Y,” one will never get to experience the incredible future vision Mann has to rid the world of talking by replacing it with messaging each other naked photos instead.

“Hit me wit a text
Let me know you’re home alone
Freaky wit that camera phone
Hit you wit a text …
She hit me up in the morning
She be textin’ when she stretchin’ and yawnin’
She be like ‘good morning’
I be like ‘good morning’
While I’m making cereal, the milk I be pourin’.”

The “amazing” lyrical styling of Mann doesn’t end there as he raps other gems like,

“That’s why I love my female
She send me naked pics straight to my e-mail,” and
“I love her screen name
A lace-top cutie
And her icon is a pic of her booty.”

The twist at the end of the video is that the whole thing seems to be a dream, as Mann wakes up in the end stating, “Come on man. You know that could never happen.”

Who knows what Mann is talking about? Nothing in the video seems too far-fetched — other than him dancing in the stars (which at times change to letters). The other parts of the video is just Mann hanging out in his house, eating his pre-mentioned cereal, and hanging out at a party. So once again, we are left wondering what Mann is talking about. What could never happen?

Most likely the answer is to the question: “Will this song and video be a hit?” The answer, provided by listeners and viewers is, “Come on Mann. You know that could never happen.”

The Beluga Heights label mates, Mann and Jason Derulo, join together for Manns Video “Text” directed by Kevin Shulman. “Text” is produced by JR Rotem and is the first single off of the upcoming album “Manns World” (C) 2010 The Island Def Jam Music Group
