MIA – XXXO (Music Video Review)

Most recently, M.I.A. has gotten a lot of press for all the wrong reasons. She has had to cut two concerts short because of technical difficulties, had a Twitter-war with a New York journalist after he wrote an unflattering profile, caused controversy with her last video for “Born Free” and tore apart Lady Gaga because Oprah Winfrey said some nice things about Gaga but gave M.I.A. the cold shoulder.

She’s starting to look like a petty child.

But let’s ignore all of the criticism the mainstream media has given to her and focus on her music, and her video release for “XXXO.”

“XXXO” is the absolute furthest departure from her “Born Free” video — which stirred up controversy for its’ violent depiction of genocide against “gingers.” “Born Free” was a masterpiece, and you can read our review here about it here. “XXXO” accomplishes a different goal, and is the 180-degree opposite.

If “Born Free” was the nightmare of a teenaged-redheaded boy, “XXXO” is the dreamlike fantasy of an eight-year-old girl. It’s as if all of the horrible html code used on MySpace vomited all over the video.

Sparkling lights, crystallized flowers and floating swans appear throughout the entire video. At one point there is even a stampede of unicorns.

But before you think that M.I.A. lost all her money and is creating her videos in a “Make Your Own Video” booth at the state fair, make sure to listen to the lyrics.

“A knock at the door / And then we hit the floor / And all I know is you leave me wanting more / I don’t let it show / But I think you know / ‘Cause you tweeting me like tweety bird on your iPhone.”

The video even ends with a rose-framed still of M.I.A. with the text “Thanks for adding me” overlaid on it.

The video is definitely a clever look at all of the relationships we have through texting and social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and MySpace.

“You want me be someone / who I’m really not,” M.I.A. sings in the chorus as if to tell all of her followers — and non-fans — that what we see in celebrity is not always true. We expect something out of people, whether in person or over the Internet.

Love her or hate her, M.I.A. is an original who doesn’t really care what people think.
