Miley Cyrus – Can’t Be Tamed (Music Video Review)

401Just like average children, Disney child stars also eventually become adults. Unlike the average teenager and young adult, Disney stars grow up under the watchful eye of the media and the fans that made that entertainer a celebrity. More often than not, young female Disney stars grow up to be very attractive and sexual young adults (See Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera), and thus create controversy with their sexy on-camera indiscretions.

Whether it’s wearing a skimpy bikini (See Annette Funicello in the 1963 film Beach Party), taking nude photos of themselves (See Vanessa Hudgens), appearing as a young prostitute in a Martin Scorsese movie (See Jodie Foster in the 1976 film Taxi Driver) or rolling around on the ground in skimpy clothes for a music video (See Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera), sexual controversy follows Disney female stars.

This is nothing new for Miley Cyrus, who has been criticized for sexual photos in Vanity Fair, a pole dancing routine for the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, and a recent video released by TMZ where she appears to be giving a lap dance to a homosexual movie producer. Controversy follows Cyrus everywhere she goes, and it’s no surprise that her new video for “Can’t Be Tamed” is shocking viewers who know Cyrus as Hannah Montana.

The video starts out inside a museum filled with snooty-looking patrons in formal clothing (and birdcage hats?) getting a peek at the museum’s newest installment: “Avis Cyrus.” Miley appears inside of a cage wearing tight black leather and gigantic bird wings. She opens her wings, and dozens of back-up dancers — all wearing little bits of leather and feathers — appear behind her. The video then follows Cyrus dancing and singing with her back-up “birds” throughout the museum.

Take away the fact that Cyrus is 17-years-old (which in celeb years is like 35-years-old according to Turtle from HBO’s Entourage), and the fact that she won over the hearts of children everyone playing the sweet Hannah Montana, and the video is actually pretty tame. Spears and Aguilera got the same criticism at her age, and for the same reason; they were “too young” and a onetime Disney star.

The dancing isn’t too sexual, and the clothing isn’t too revealing. Sure, Cyrus lays inside of a Peacock’s plumage rubbing herself, but even this shows more vulnerability than sexual promiscuity.

Cyrus has hit the media circuit claiming that people should not judge the video based on it’s sexual overtones telling E!, “I think it explains my life, but it doesn’t exclude other people’s lives. It’s not just about how fabulous and glamorous and all this. It’s about the core of ‘I don’t want to be in a cage. I want to be free and do what I love … The video isn’t about being sexy or who can wear less clothes … It’s about explaining the song and living the lyrics.”

Using the excuse that listening to the lyrics will calm people’s opinion about the raciness of the video is probably a bad idea though, as Cyrus sings,

“I go through guys like money flyin’ out of their hands
They try to change me but they realize they can’t
And every tomorrow is a day I never planned
If you’re gonna be my man, then understand
I can’t be tamed
I can’t be saved
I can’t be blamed….”

So, she’s a prostitute? “I go through guys like money flyin’ out of their hands?” “Every tomorrow is a day I never planned?” Yep, sounds like a prostitute.

The point is that Cyrus is almost an adult, and she is leaving her childhood stardom behind. It’s too bad that most female Disney stars feel the need to show off their sexual side in order to be considered an adult in the entertainment industry. Other than Keri Russell, who was a Mickey Mouseketeer alongside Spears and Aguilera, many other females have shed some clothing to make the transition from child Disney star to adult Disney star, thus creating controversy. It wasn’t any different for Annette Funicello in the 1960s, and it’s not any different for Miley Cyrus today.
