Muse – Neutron Star Collision (Music Video Review)

Many people these days rely on Twitter and its’ “Trending Topics” feed to find their news. If someone were to look at the #TT (as Tweeters refer to Trending Topics) on May 20, one may be frightened to learn that a collision of atoms known as a “Neutron Star Collision” was about to obliterate earth.

Upon further research, research involving looking at actual news sources rather than 140 characters of Tweets written by someone with the Twitter handle of @GlamBucket, one will soon realize that “Neutron Star Collision” is a new song and video by the band Muse. It’s trending so rapidly because the video shows portions of the upcoming Eclipse film, part of Stephanie Meyers Twilight series.

The video is 3:53 long, and scenes from the upcoming movie — which will be released on June 30 — appear sporadically in the video as if they are hidden subliminal messages. The shots of the film total only 28 seconds of the entire video. With quick edits, and plenty of Bella/Edward kissing, the video will be played over and over again in the bedrooms of teenage girls for the next month.

The video features Muse playing the song in front of a wall of colors. Every once in awhile the colored-wall changes to a scene of the movie, or the entire frame is taken up with a quick scene of a wolf or vampire. That’s it. That’s the entire video.

The song’s message and lyrics metaphorically link the love between Bella and Edward, or Bella and Jacob, like a “Neutron Star Collision,” which is explained by the Hayden Planetarium as “Two neutron stars merging together in less than a hundredth of a second releasing more energy during that time than our Sun would in ten billion years.” This is the perfect metaphor for the loved shared in the Twilight films. Well, not exactly perfect, as the neutron collision involves only two stars — not one human, one vampire and one wolf.

But to teenage fans of the series, they may argue differently. The lyrics of the song match the theme.

“I was searching, you were on a mission
Then our hearts combined like a neutron collision
I have nothing left to lose
You took your time to choose
Then we told each other with no trace of fear
That our love would be forever
And if we die, we die together
Well I said never
Cause our love would be forever.”

How sweet. How nerdy. How very sweet and very nerdy. Muse and Twilight definitely know their audience.

Whether or not the song is catchy or the music if great, the video will rack up millions of views because the song is the first single off the Eclipse Soundtrack. Twilight isn’t going anywhere soon, and the Twitterverse will be filled with Twilight¬-influenced Trending Topics all summer long. Now, it’s off to find out what vampire film inspired the Trending Topic #OilSpill.
