The band Muse is about to see the bark and bite of Twilight Fans — depending on if they are affiliated with Team Jacob or Team Edward — after telling a British media outlet that they “[sold] their soul” by being a part of the movie’s soundtrack.
Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme told BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat,
“I’m not sure how cool it is to be on those kinds of things, but sometimes you’ve just got to get your music out there in different ways.”
Wolstenholme acknowledge that the band agreed to have their music in the films as a way to gather more American fans.
“It’s very difficult in America, because you don’t have anything like Radio 1, nothing is national. You have to take every opportunity you get over there, and sometimes you have to sell your soul.”
Those are some pretty strong words. Many celebrities and artists have “sold out” to corporations or “The Man,” but Wolstenholme is comparing their rise in popularity to the famous “Crossroads” story of Robert Johnson — who some believe literally sold his soul to the Devil in order to become a great blues guitarist.
In this case, the bassist is comparing hordes of teenage girls to Satan — which actually is a pretty fair comparison. Teenage girls and Satan both hang out at the mall constantly Tweeting about Justin Bieber while worrying that the zits (or horns) they have on their forehead are noticeable. Satan loves Justin Bieber — which explains why he is always a Trending Topic and is a millionaire.
But can anyone blame Muse for jumping on the Twilight bandwagon? It’s not everyday that something as huge as Twilight comes along with gigantic coattails to ride on. Muse has been huge in Europe for more than a decade, but most people in the States only heard of them after their songs appeared in Guitar Hero.
Michael Jackson got paid to sell L.A. Gear sneakers, The Rolling Stones pimped Microsoft Windows 95 and Bob Dylan songs grace Pepsi commercials. Most artists, at one time or another, have sold out to make some extra cash. Almost all famous American celebrities shill in commercials in foreign countries — just search for “Brad Pitt Roots Canned Coffee” or “John Travolta Tokyo Drink” on YouTube to see for yourself — so why can’t a famous European band make an American buck selling their songs to vampire movies?
Wolstenholme is being honest by stating that Muse sold their soul, and by doing so will earn the respect of those who thought Muse was ridiculous for being a part of Twilight. But, in doing so, Muse has bitten the hand that feeds them.
