Nicki Minaj – Your Love (Music Video Review)

Nicki Minaj has traded in her typical tight and revealing clothing, along with her sexually explosive lyrics, for the samurai-inspired video for her newest release “Your Love.” Minaj’s signature flow is still there, and she still looks smokin’ hot in her Geisha-girl get-up, but the entire feel of the video is more mature and impressive than some of her past shoots.

Some of this maturity is due to the sampling of the Annie Lennox 1986 hit “No More ‘I Love You’s.’” The part of the song Minaj samples is iconic. Luckily, all Minaj did was sample the song and did not try and recreate Lennox’s ridiculously weird video; which is basically a homoerotic sexual fantasy by the cast of Moulin Rouge combined with the masked orgy from Eyes Wide Shut. You know you’re about to watch something truly surreal as the video opens with grown men, with facial hair and makeup, wearing ballerina outfits spreading flowers all over a vaudevillian stage as Lennox appears looking like the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. Watch if you must, but just know that you have been warned.

Minaj keeps her video much simpler, and much less homoerotic, than the original sampled track did. The video for “Your Love” is effective and wonderfully crafted. Minaj is part of a group of young female samurais getting taught by Michael Jai White. Minaj and White fall for each other, while another student becomes jealous if the budding romance. The scene goes back in forth between the jealousy storyline and Minaj singing/rapping the track — all while in front of brightly-colored flowing curtains that represent the sky, a river, and at the very end a pool of blood.

Minaj raps a little more methodically along with the music, but the sample and message behind the song calls for this.

“Shawty Imma only tell you this once, you’re the illest / And for your lovin’ Imma Die Hard like Bruce Willis / You got the spark, you, you got the spunk / You, you got something all the girls want / You’re like a candy store / And I’m a toddler / You got me wantin’ more and mo’ mo’ more.”

The jealous student finally challenges Minaj and a sword fight between the two ensues. Minaj’s competitor quickly proves to be a dirty fighter, as she throws salt in Minaj’s face as the two bow to each other. Because of the dirty tricks, the jealous girl is able to stab Minaj in the torso. White finds Minaj bleeding to death and screams to the heavens.

The song and video definitely adds a new layer to Minaj, who can at times be type casted as being too sexual. True fans will love it, and it’s sure to win over some new fans before her debut album releases in November.
