The video starts out with several shots of people walking down the street in what appears to be the Eastern Bloc of the former Soviet Union. It isn’t until we see a Pennsylvania license plate on a Honda that the viewer realizes that this is not Communist-Russia.
Adam Young, the sole musician for Owl City, starts to sing about his first love — his girlfriend from High School who sadly moved away. One can tell that Young has not gotten over this heartbreak as he sings, “I swear I won’t forget you / Oh, if my voice could reach / Back through the past / I’d whisper in your ear / Oh darling, I wish you were here.”
With lines like that, and the fact that the song has the word “Twilight” in its title, Owl City is quickly becoming a favorite among teenage girls who just want a good cry in between reading passages from “The Notebook” and watching “New Moon” on DVD. Thousands of High School yearbooks will be filled with Young’s lyrics this Spring, such as, “I’ll watch the night turn light-blue / But it’s not the same without you / Because it takes two to whisper quietly.” Young must be on “Team Edward” since Edward is a vampire and go can clubbing at night, while Jacob is stuck on the reservation playing fetch.

The video starts to get interesting when everyone starts to stare at the sky, as the clouds open up as they have done so often in movies like Independence Day and television shows like V. The video cycles through a series of people staring at the sky: old white guy, taxi driver, cute kid, homeless Vietnam Vet, blonde girl, Shaquille O’Neal, bearded hippy, dog … wait … was that Shaq? WTF? Seriously WTF? What is Shaquille O’Neal doing in this video? Did the script call for a 7-foot-tall black guy? Is Shaq a big Owl City fan? Why is he screaming, “Take me with you!” to the sky? Who is he talking to? Lebron James? Is he also trying to get signed by the New York Knicks? Damn you Owl City! Damn you and your unanswered questions!
You take a simple video concept and turn it into and episode of LOST.

The video continues in the same fashion, with all of the “actors,” which includes Shaq in his follow-up to Kazaam, all looking up at the sky at the big shiny hole on the horizon. We know why everyone is staring, but we never get an answer to why people’s moods suddenly change from gloomy to upbeat. Well, in the case of the dog, it’s most likely due to the fact that the director is holding some sort of treat. But, for the humans we never know why they seem so happy to see a giant gaping whole filled with an aurora borealis-like sky nowhere near the North Pole.
And maybe this video perfectly describes the allure, and mystery, behind the popularity of Owl City. Lots of beauty, with no real substance; just what teenage girls love.
