One cannot deny the sheer promotional power that is Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. Put their name on something, and it will quickly become popular. Now add their names and the word “telephone” to the title of your YouTube video and watch the number of views shoot up.
There have been parodies of Lady Gaga’s video for “Telephone,” there have been people lip synching to the incredibly popular song, and there have been covers of other bands doing it. But, the classical cover by the group Aston truly shows how remarkable this song truly is.
You cannot rack up more than 500,000 views without something worthy of watching, and although some of those views have come from people accidentally clicking on the video while searching for the original, the cover is truly incredible.
Aston features six classical trained musicians playing an instrumental version of Lady Gaga’s most recent hit. The six musicians play the piano, violin, cello, drums and acoustic guitar on this track.
Aston is an Australian group signed to Warner Brothers, and all the members have studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the most distinguished music school in Australia. Some of the members have not yet graduated yet, and all the members are between ages 21 and 23, according to the group’s Web site.
The musical vision for the group is “To present a set of classic and contemporary songs like no one has ever heard them before. Contemporary classics presented as classical music,” according to their Web site.
They have picked the perfect song to breakout to. Many people think that Lady Gaga’s popularity stems from her ability to shock people and weird them out. Sure, she has become a celebrity due to her unique “fashion” and her risqué live performances on national television programs, but the root of all her stardom is from her musical talent. No one can deny this when they hear Aston’s version of “Telephone.”
Simply put; it’s beautiful. Whereas the original version makes you want to dance, the classical version makes you want to cry.
Beethoven and Bach must be spinning in their graves to know that classically trained musicians are playing music composed by someone who has sung lyrics like “Glamophonic, electronic, disco baby / I like you a lot, lot / All we want is hot, hot / Boys, boys, boys” instead of their symphonies.
But who knows. If Beethoven was alive today, would he still be composing the same music he did in the early 1800’s, or would he be collaborating with Lady Gaga like so many big names have like Beyoncé and Elton John?
Unfortunately that question is a hypothetical one and can never be answered. But, the question of, “Does Lady Gaga’s music, when played on classical instruments, sound beautiful?” can in fact be answered. Yes, yes it does.
