Usher: “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” ft. Pitbull (Music Video Review)

Usher’s recent video release for “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” featuring Pitbull, has gotten some music critics saying that Usher is back to old-form Usher. Some say this is a great thing. Others are claiming that Usher is just a one-trick pony.

Whether or not Usher has only one trick up his sleeve, it’s still one pretty awesome trick.

Usher creates music that makes you want to dance. Simple as that. Almost no one does it any better. Whatever your “Dance Threshold”* is, Usher can basically make it non-existent. He has an uncanny ability to get everyone on his or her feet.

*Note: The “Dance Threshold” is a concept created by comedian Christian Finnegan that analyzes how much music one can take before they NEED to dance. For instance, according to Finnegan, gay men and Latina women have very low thresholds. They start to dance immediately. Fat white guys have very high dance thresholds and usually have to be dragged onto the dance floor.

And this is Usher’s bread and butter. He makes music for the club, and he makes videos of him dancing in clubs. The video for “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” was directed by Hiro Murai, who most recently directed The Fray’s “Heartless” and B.o.B.’s “Airplanes.” He takes advantage of a slow motion technique that has recently become very popular — in which the main focus stays in regular speed, but the background extras and dancers are in slow motion. In this case, the video’s focus is Usher — more accurately, his dance moves — as he walk/dances through a dimly-lit mansion filled with sexy slow motion dancers.

The lyrics for the song fit the simplistic meaning perfectly.

“So we back in the club / Get that bodies rockin’ from side to side (side to side) / Thank God the week is done / I feel like a zombie gone back to life (back to life) / Hands up, and suddenly we all got our hands up / No control of my body / Ain’t I seen you before? / I think I remember those eyes, eyes, eyes / Cause baby tonight, the DJ got us falling in love again.”

The video continues with more dancing by Usher — at one point in a shadowed silhouette with two females — and with rapper Pitbull in a VIP booth rapping in Spanglish.

Usher made a return to his musical roots with the club-thumping track “OMG.” He continues this trend with “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” and does exactly what he should be doing; making gay men, Latina women, and fat white guys dance.
