Usher Ft. Will.I.Am – OMG (Music Video Review)

4 Stars

The video for Usher’s new single “OMG,” featuring will.i.am sacrifices any type of plot or story for multiple choreographed dance numbers and shiny futuristic settings — which honestly suits the auto-tuned club track perfectly.

Usher is not trying to reinvent the medium with this video, but he does provide some great dance moves to what will surely be one of the more popular songs from his new album Raymond v. Raymond.

Usher - OMG

The video opens up with both Usher and will.i.am explaining to females that, “There’s so many ways to love ya, baby I can break you down.” Each singer is in their own separate laser-filled rooms making the viewer believe the two may make cameos in this summer’s re-make of TRON. Add some light-Frisbees or some speeding kamikaze motorcycles and the two would fit right into the video-game-inspired film.

The scene then changes to Usher dancing with a half-dozen scantily clad female dancers in a white room with some quick edits. Usher sings to the dancers, “Honey got some booty like pow, pow, pow. Honey got some boobies like wow, oh, wow.” It’s simple — very simple — but straight to the point.

Usher apparently gets tired of dancing with the girls, and takes a break to just watch them while wearing oversized mirrored-sunglasses while the girls crawl erotically back to him. Once he takes the glasses off, the girls disappear and Usher starts to dance with four shadows showing off Matrix-like aerial spins.

Will.i.am then chimes in, adding nothing to the song. Quickly the track slows down just a bit while Usher starts his third dance scene, on top of a steel grate with both male and female backup dancers. What makes this number even more impressive is Usher also choreographs his cigar smoking — something not often seen in high-energy dance numbers.

Although he has already started to be criticized for heavy use of auto-tune on recent releases from the new album, “OMG” will surely get heavy airplay on the radio and especially in the club — where thousands will try to emulate Usher’s moves with little to no success.
